Tips for WFH?

I try and get out for a few short walks, morning, lunchtime, and once I’m done for the day. Curious what other people are doing to stay refreshed while working remotely?

I try to have a daily routine of working out in the morning before starting my work day (I’ve also joined a group of colleagues who have Pelotons so we can ride together once a week) and I’ll take my dogs out for a walk at lunchtime. I think it’s also helpful to set blocks of time for focus work and when you’ll end your work day as it’s easy to keep working through the evening.

Something that’s really changed for me is halving my caffeine intake. The machine pours me one 12oz cup of black coffee, I dilute it with milk, and drink half on Day 1, half on Day 2. Gives me the energy without the usual drawbacks of caffeine.

And, of course, drink lots of water.

I’d say that prioritizing an up-to-date work calendar is one big key to WFH for me.

I prefer to populate blocks of focus time for specific tasks in advance. This way my calendar shows availability for meetings, but reflects the sections where I am already committed to particular things.

Another bit of advice I have is to switch up the work environment every now and then. Sticking with the same view in the same room can become a bit stale. I like to move my laptop to different rooms and to different desks/tables in order to change things up from time to time.

Setting up work hours in GCal is a must. Set barriers publicly so you don’t get meetings scheduled on your personal time. If you want work outside that block, it’s up to you. But protect your schedule outside of work as best as you can.
